Following on from his successful pioneering robotic liver resection in January 2012, Mr Charles Imber has just become the first UK surgeon to perform a robotic pancreatic resection. The operation to remove the pancreas from a patient with pancreatic cancer took place in March 2012.
Like liver surgery, certain experts have performed laparoscopic pancreatic surgery and achieved good results. This was, however, a major resection of the pancreatic head with the duodenum which then required a complex reconstruction of abdominal organs.
“We feel that the technological advantages that robotic surgery can provide can increase the safety of this type of surgery in the future,” said Mr Imber.
